The State Guest House, completed in 1984, was designed by architect Einari Teräsvirta. The facades of the three-storey building are red-brown granite and sand-lime brick, while the window frames are made of pine with a translucent finish. The building has a gross floor area of 2,610 m2, including attics, storage rooms, basements and similar facilities. The actual living area, rented by the Office of the President of the Republic of Finland as the official residence of the President, is approximately 1,500 m2. The building is owned by the State of Finland and managed by Senate Properties.

Between 2022 and 2024, the State Guest House underwent extensive renovation. During the renovation, the building’s structures and facilities were updated to better meet today’s needs and standards. The use of the State Guest House as a temporary residence of the President of the Republic was taken into account in the planning of the renovation. For example, guest rooms were converted into offices. The solutions adopted for the office and living areas are partly temporary and can easily be adapted to the main purpose of the building.
