Press release 552/2024

On Friday 22 November, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the recent damage to undersea telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea. The National Bureau of Investigation is investigating the matter in Finland and engaging in international cooperation. It is still too early to assess the cause of the damage. The damage does not affect network traffic or Finland’s security of supply. The matter will be reassessed once further information has been obtained through the investigation.

The President and the Ministerial Committee also received a briefing on hybrid influence activities targeting Finland and discussed Finland’s participation in a summit of the leaders of the Nordic and Baltic countries (NB8) and Poland in Harpsund, Sweden on 27–28 November 2024, which will focus on topical security policy issues such as transatlantic cooperation, security in the Baltic Sea and support for Ukraine.
