President and Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discuss situation at eastern border and in sea area, Finland’s support to Ukraine and intelligence priorities for 2025

In their meeting on Tuesday 5 November, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the situation at the eastern border and in the sea area, held a preparatory discussion on the priorities of civilian and military intelligence for 2025 and discussed Finland’s objectives for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).

The President and the Ministerial Committee outlined that Finland will participate in NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine with a maximum of six soldiers as part of the comprehensive assistance package agreed on at the NATO Summit in Washington. Finland stresses the importance of the Allies’ continuous and long-term international support for Ukraine’s defence capability.

The President and the Ministerial Committee also discussed the situation in the Middle East and received a briefing on the Resolutions on the Question of Palestine adopted annually by the UN General Assembly. In addition, the President and the Ministerial Committee discussed the laws adopted by the Israeli parliament concerning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees UNRWA. Finland supports the UN and the multilateral rules-based international system.

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 11–22 November 2024. Finland’s delegation will be led by President Stubb. Finland’s objective at the Conference is to ensure that the countries commit to the agreed emissions reductions and come up with a sustainable solution for climate finance.
