President Stubb in Berlin: “I’ve never felt as Nordic as I do today”

President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb, accompanied by his spouse Suzanne Innes-Stubb, paid a visit to Berlin from 21 to 22 October 2024. The Presidential couple took part in the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Nordic Embassy Complex in Berlin, where President Stubb gave a speech on behalf of Finland.

In his speech, President Stubb emphasised the close partnership between the five Nordic countries and noted that they have a very cohesive culture:

“The Nordic countries are at the same time different and yet similar. We share a common history, a common culture and a common language.”

President Stubb also spoke about the security that the Nordic countries provide for each other.

“The security situation is very challenging. I am very happy that we joined NATO together with Sweden,” said the President.

In the evening, President Stubb and his spouse attended a dinner hosted by the German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Schloss Bellevue.

President Stubb’s programme also included bilateral meetings with President of Iceland Halla Tómasdóttir, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

President Stubb and Chancellor Scholz discussed the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East as well as President Stubb’s upcoming trip to China.

“Finland and Germany will continue to support Ukraine diplomatically and with defence equipment,” the President said after the meeting.
