President Stubb in Jyväskylä: “I remember Martti J. Kari with warmth”

President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb visited Jyväskylä on Tuesday 3 December 2024.

During his visit, President Stubb delivered the first part of the Martti J. Kari Memorial Lecture Series at the University of Jyväskylä. The President said that he remembers Colonel Martti J. Kari, who was an expert in military intelligence, and the conversations he had with him with warmth. The theme of the lecture was “World Politics in Transition: Multipolar disorder or multilateral order”.

“We need to move from multipolar disorder towards multilateral order. This will require a redistribution of power,” said President Stubb.

According to the President, it is always in the interest of a small country that international institutions work.

In the morning, President Stubb inspected the Finnish Defence Forces C5 Agency and visited the NATO Cyber Coalition 2024 exercise. At the end of the inspection, the President rewarded conscripts for their outstanding work in the field of cyber security.

“The line between war and peace is volatile, not least because of cyber threats. This visit has shown that our ability to respond to cyber threats is strong, but the challenges are great,” the President said.

President Stubb’s programme also included a meeting with the public at the University of Jyväskylä’s Lähde Library and a visit to Nammo’s factory in Vihtavuori north of Jyväskylä. The President was interviewed by Hilma Hintikka, Chair of the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä. At the Nammo plant, the President was briefed on the company’s operations and then given a tour of the site.
