President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb visited the region of Kainuu in Eastern Finland on 18–19 February 2024.
Tuesday 18 February kicked off at Sotkamo Sports High School and continued at Vuokatti Sports Institute, where students from the Ruka Vuokatti Sport Academy trained cross-country skiing. During their meeting with the President, the young people shared their experiences of combining studies and sport.
At Vuokatti, President Stubb also met with decision-makers from Sotkamo municipality and representatives of local sports operators. In the afternoon, the President met the players of Sotkamon Jymy, one of the most successful teams in the history of Finnish baseball. President Stubb had a go at the ball himself and took the opportunity to congratulate the team on winning the Finnish Championship 2024.
Inspection of the Kainuu Brigade
On Wednesday 19 February, President Stubb paid an inspection visit to the Kainuu Brigade in Kajaani. The President was introduced to combat and ski training, and even went skiing with the conscripts in the sunny winter weather.
Next on the agenda was a visit to the Seminaarin koulu primary school, where the President met pupils and was briefed on the school’s bilingual English-Finnish education.
In the afternoon, President Stubb met with members of the public at the Kaukametsä Congress and Cultural Centre. After the public event, the programme continued at a nearby sports hall for a meeting with the gymnasts of Kajaani Gymnastics, the Finnish Sports Club of the Year 2024.
At the end of the day, the President visited the CSC Data Center for a demonstration of the LUMI supercomputer, which is used to boost top-level research in Finland and Europe.
