President Stubb visits Utsjoki and Inari


President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb made a trip to Utsjoki and Inari in Lapland from 23 to 24 May 2024.

The visit started in Nuorgam, Utsjoki on Thursday 23 May. President Stubb visited the Nuorgam primary school and was interviewed by pupils of the school. After the school visit, the President had a lunch meeting with representatives of the Utsjoki municipality and local reindeer breeders. The discussion focused on topical issues related to the region and its sources of livelihood.

Later, President Stubb met members of the public at the Giisá community centre in Utsjoki.

In the afternoon, President Stubb visited the Kevo Strict Nature Reserve. The programme included a visit to the Kevo Subarctic Research Institute, talks with representatives of Metsähallitus and a hike.

On Friday 24 May, President Stubb met representatives of the Sámi Parliament in Inari to discuss current issues affecting the Sámi people. The President also visited the Sámi Museum and Siida Nature Centre, which has been nominated European Museum of the Year.

After a transfer to Ivalo, the President met with the leadership of Inari municipality and discussed issues of current interest in the Northern Lapland region. The President also met representatives of the Inari Reindeer Herders’ Association.

The visit to Lapland ended at the Ivalo School and Culture Centre Kaarre, where the President met local people.
