President of the Republic Tarja Halonen will travel to Washington on 10-14 April 2010 to attend the Nuclear Security Summit convened by President Barack Obama.
The goal of the summit is to strengthen international cooperation aimed at improving nuclear security. Working sessions will look at national and international measures to secure nuclear material and the prevention of nuclear terrorism. Representatives of over 40 countries as well as international organizations will attend the two-day summit.
In Washington President Halonen will also meet American women leaders at a luncheon that is being arranged by the Finnish Embassy in cooperation with the Center for American Progress. Special topics on this occasion will include women's role in mitigating climate change and UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. Timely matters being addressed by the Council of Women World Leaders will also receive attention during the trip. President Halonen is the Chair of the Council.
