President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö met members of the Finnish Climate Change Panel at Mäntyniemi on Friday 24 November 2023.

The independent climate panel is appointed by the Government and it promotes dialogue between science and politics and gives recommendations for climate policy-making.

Topics of the discussion included the state of international climate cooperation, Finland’s climate work, the fairness of climate policy and the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on people. The President and the members of the Climate Change Panel also discussed the future of Arctic cooperation in climate change mitigation.

The Climate Change Panel, which is appointed for a fixed term, consists of 14 scientists representing the main key disciplines relevant to climate policy. The panel is chaired by Professor Markku Ollikainen of the University of Helsinki. The current Panel’s four-year term expires at the end of this year.
