The President of the Republic of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, had an extensive and thorough telephone conversation with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, on Thursday 30 April 2020.
The Presidents stressed the importance of security cooperation, both at the European level and bilaterally between Finland and France. The Presidents noted that the coronavirus crisis has also demonstrated how important it is for Europe to be able to act independently.
President Niinistö thanked President Macron for his initiative in promoting dialogue between the great powers on arms control and on other multilateral cooperation. Finland is ready to offer its services also in these matters. The Presidents also discussed relations with Russia.
President Niinistö expressed his condolences for the victims of the coronavirus in France. The Presidents discussed measures taken by Finland and France, respectively, to combat the pandemic.
