The Independence Day of President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö and Mrs Jenni Haukio on Monday, 6 December 2021 will begin with the laying of a wreath at the Hero’s Cross in Hietaniemi Cemetery.
From Hietaniemi, the presidential couple will proceed to Helsinki Cathedral, where they will light candles, as they did last year.
On the evening of Independence Day, the presidential couple will give an interview to Yle’s Independence Day live TV broadcast from the Presidential Palace. In addition to the presidential couple, the broadcast will present live music and thoughts of war veterans, members of the Lotta Svärd and people who distinguished themselves during the COVID pandemic. The broadcast can be watched live on Yle TV1 from 7.15 pm to 8.30 pm. Before this, the presidential couple’s programme also includes viewing the Students’ Torchlight Procession from the balcony of the Presidential Palace.
