President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö had a telephone conversation with President Vladimir Putin during the morning of 6 November 2014. The discussion was conducted on Finland’s initiative. During the telephone conversation, which lasted around an hour, the presidents discussed the Ukraine crisis and, in particular, the continuation of the peace process. President Niinistö stated that Finland would not acknowledge the elections organised on 2 November in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine. He saw it as crucial that a peaceful solution to the crisis proceed as soon as possible. Furthermore, the President affirmed that it would be important for Finland and Russia to maintain open channels of discussion in the future.
