President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö had a long and thorough phone call with President of Russia Vladimir Putin on Friday, 21 January 2022.
The Presidents spoke about geopolitics, including European security and the situation in Ukraine. President Niinistö expressed his serious concern over the current situation and emphasized that it is imperative to preserve peace in Europe. In the discussion, the need to find solutions by means of the ongoing dialogue was emphasized.
President Niinistö pointed out in the discussion that Finland exercises full sovereignty over its security policy.
The Presidents noted the 30th anniversary of the treaty on relations between Finland and Russia, 20 January 2022.
The phone call was initiated by Finland.
