President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö had a phone call with President of the United States Joseph R. Biden on Monday, 13 December 2021.
President Niinistö expressed his condolences on the loss of lives caused by the tornados in the United States.
The main topic of the conversation was the worrisome situation at the borders of Ukraine. The presidents considered it important to cooperate in order to find a diplomatic resolution to the tense situation.
In the context of the conversation on the bilateral relations between Finland and the United States President Niinistö told President Biden about the main pillars of Finnish security policy. President Niinistö said that he appreciates that NATO maintains its Open Door policy. In addition, President Niinistö opened his thinking on the Helsinki Spirit to President Biden.
Earlier on Monday, 13 December, President Niinistö had a phone conversation with Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The topic of that conversation was Prime Minister Mitsotakis’s meeting with President of Russia Vladimir Putin in Sochi in the preceding week.
On Tuesday, 14 December President Niinistö is due to have a telephone conversation with President Putin.
