President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö will travel to New York on 18–21 September to attend the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations. President Niinistö will give Finland’s national address at the General Assembly on Wednesday 21 September.
On Monday 19 September, President Niinistö will attend a high-level summit, hosted by the UN Secretary General, addressing large movements of refugees and migrants. In addition, on Tuesday 20 September the President will attend a leaders’ summit hosted by President of the United States Barack Obama on the global refugee crisis.
On the evening of Tuesday 20 September, the President will speak at the HeForShe campaign event organised by the UN gender equality organisation, UN Women, in the Museum of Modern Art, MoMa. President Niinistö is a Head of State IMPACT Champion of the campaign, belonging to a group composed of heads of state and government, and corporate and university leaders.
The President’s programme will also include bilateral meetings. He will head the Finnish delegation at the UN General Assembly. The delegation will also include Minister for Foreign Affairs Timo Soini, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Kai Mykkänen and Minister of Social Affairs and Health Pirkko Mattila.
